What AEO and GEO actually mean
Two acronyms, one shift: customers asking AI assistants for recommendations instead of searching. Here is what the terms mean, plainly, and what can honestly be done about them.
Answer Engine Optimisation, defined
Answer Engine Optimisation, AEO, is the work of making a business easy for answer engines to find, understand and name. An answer engine is anything that replies to a question with an answer rather than a list of links: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and the answer boxes at the top of search results.
The practical work is unglamorous: letting the crawlers in, serving content that is readable without running JavaScript, stating who you are consistently everywhere your name appears, and being present on the pages the engines actually read.
Generative Engine Optimisation, defined
Generative Engine Optimisation, GEO, is the work of improving how often, and how favourably, a business appears inside answers written by generative AI. Those answers are assembled from web sources the system retrieves at the moment of the question, so GEO is largely the work of shaping and reaching those sources.
How they differ, and why they are converging
AEO began around search answer boxes; GEO began around chat assistants. AEO leans technical, making a site machine-readable. GEO leans editorial, earning presence in the material the systems cite. In practice the two are converging fast, because the assistants now search the live web before answering: the same crawler access, the same structured facts and the same third-party mentions drive both. Most working practitioners treat them as one discipline with two names.
What can be influenced, and what cannot
You can influence the inputs: whether the crawlers can read your site, whether your content answers the questions your customers ask, whether your name, address and offering are consistent across the web, whether the directories and publications the answers cite actually list you, and whether any of this exists in Arabic as well as English.
You cannot control the output. The assistants decide what to say, and their answers vary between asks, which is why a single screenshot proves nothing and any measurement worth paying for asks repeatedly and counts. Nobody can guarantee a citation or a recommendation. Anyone who promises one is selling something they do not control.
Why we avoid the acronyms
The acronyms describe how the work is done. What you buy is simpler to say: finding out whether AI assistants name your business when your customers ask, and a ranked list of what to change. That is why our packages never carry the acronyms.
Common questions
What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimisation is the work of making a business easy for answer engines, such as AI assistants and search boxes that reply with a single answer, to find, understand and name when someone asks a question the business should win.
What is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimisation is the work of improving how often and how favourably a business appears inside answers written by generative AI systems, by shaping the web sources those systems read and cite.
Can anyone guarantee my business gets recommended by AI?
No. The assistants decide what to say and their answers change between asks. Anyone promising a guaranteed ranking or citation is promising something they do not control. What can honestly be done is measuring where you stand and fixing the reasons you are absent.
Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap but they are not the same. SEO earns a position on a results page a person scrolls. AEO earns a mention inside an answer, where there is no page two. Ranking well on Google does not carry over, because assistants build answers from a different set of sources.
Does AEO work in Arabic?
Yes, and it has to be done separately. Arabic answers are built from Arabic sources and often name different companies. A business with no real Arabic presence is usually invisible in Arabic answers even when it does well in English.
